This Is the Narrowest Street in Italy

La Ruetta, which Google Translate is rendering as "The Wheel" is a road in Civitella del Tronto, Teramo, Italy. Measuring under 16 inches across, it's the narrowest road in Italy.
Why was it built this way? A tourism website for the Abruzzo region of Italy explains that centuries ago, many urban paths were intentionally made small to make it difficult for enemy forces to swarm into a city.
Now, the road is more of a tourist attraction than a military impediment--although the tight confines might also prevent wayward tourists from capturing the neighborhood quickly.
